Acupuncture is the practice of inserting small needles at specific points of the body to balance the flow of energy and is sometimes used with a machine that creates electronic pulses to stimulate the areas in which the needles are inserted.  This type of alternative medicine has been used in the veterinary field to treat arthritis, pain management, and the treatment of certain diseases.

Testimonials about Acupuncture and Dr. Marybeth Polek, our staff veterinarian who is certified in Veterinary Acupuncture

"One day my ten-year-old Golden Retriever was unable to stand.  I was so worried that this was the beginning of the end for my beloved dog.  Dr. Polek was great with Taxi!  She reassured me that Taxi had years left and she recommended acupuncture and laser treatments.  With only one treatment of each, Taxi was up and retrieving tennis balls and wrestling with our puppy.  Whenever Taxi has a sore period I sign her up for a laser and acupuncture session.
Thanks, Dr. Polek- I have my puppy back!"

"About a year and a half ago North Shore Animal Hospital was recommended to me for Acupuncture for my dog's knee. My 5-year-old black Labrador Retriever, Jimmy, had 3 unsuccessful knee surgeries and I needed to explore options to surgery. I made an appointment and was seen promptly. Jimmy responded immediately to acupuncture provided by Dr. Mary Beth Polek and was visibly better after his first session. His condition improved with every visit and he was the best he had been in years.  Recently, after a year of pain-free movement, he had a recurrence of his knee injury due to slipping on a staircase.  He had not put his left leg down for 2 weeks.  I called North Shore and was promptly seen.  This time, in addition to Acupuncture, Dr. Polek treated Jimmy with cold laser therapy. Jimmy limped into the hospital on 3 legs but walked out of the hospital after that first session on all 4 legs.  He limped, but for the first time in 2 weeks, after just one session of Acupuncture and cold laser therapy, Jimmy put his left leg down and put some weight on it.  We've now done 3 weekly sessions and also added injury-specific herbs to his diet and Jimmy now walks on all fours with just a slight limp. I am receiving no compensation for writing this and I am simply doing it to show appreciation for what North Shore and Dr. Polek have done for Jimmy and to make people aware of the real-life benefits of Acupuncture and cold laser therapy for animals.  I highly recommend those therapies and the herbal supplementation provided by North Shore Animal Hospital, it has worked wonders for Jimmy."

"We are so very thankful to have found Dr. Polek at North Shore Veterinary Hospital.  Our Miniature Schnauzer, Harli, has always been very active and loves to walk across the back of the couches and even sleeps on top of them.  However, in the spring of 2012, she stopped jumping on the couches.  We would try to get her excited and jump up beside us, but she refused.  We found that your hospital had a vet who practiced acupuncture, Dr. Polek. Harli began treatment also with the laser--first every week, then every two weeks, decreasing to once a month and a follow-up as necessary.  We are happy to report that she has not had a treatment in about 6 weeks and she is doing great!!! She is back to her "ole" self.  She will be 9 in March.  (She even initiates play --which she had stopped doing.)  On our last visit, Dr. Polek showed us massage techniques and stretching exercises to do at home. We are very grateful Harli benefited so well from the treatments. Wishing your wonderful staff --All the Best!!"
